Happy World Oceans Day!

World Oceans Day has been recognized by the United Nations since 2009. Before that it had been coordinated by The Ocean Project since 2002 and celebrated on a smaller scale even before that.

A different theme is chose each year, this year it is Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet.

The oceans make up enough of this planet that I think it goes without saying that we can’t have one without the other.

The push this year is to use less disposable plastic.  They aren’t talking about not using any plastic at all – that’s pretty much impossible at this time.  Think about the one use plastic items that you use on a daily basis.  At first I thought it was a fairly easy challenge, but then I looked at the Marine Conservation Society’s Plastic Challenge Tip Swap and holy crap. It’s not just grocery bags that we throw away on a daily basis.  Its trash bags, toothpaste containers, milk/tea/gallon water containers, liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner bottles, the plastic that heads of lettuce and grape tomatoes come in, the list goes on forever.  It’s actually pretty intimidating. But what isn’t intimidating is choosing just one thing for now.  Maybe stop using straws, start using loose tea instead of tea bags, or bring your own bags to the grocer (not the most fun BYOB but still).

Personally I am going to try very hard to actually remember to bring in the stash of cloth bags I have had in my trunk for ages and to bring a net bag on my paddleboard for picking up trash I come across.  On Memorial Day I actually ran across an empty Cheetos bag floating in the water.  Really?

If you are bummed you didn’t find out about World Ocean’s Day sooner no worries, President Obama just proclaimed June as National Oceans Month.  So pick a one use plastic item and see how long you can go without using it.  And when you get used to going without that item pick another.  Because the oceans don’t just need us to keep them clean and healthy just one day or even just one month a year.

What one use plastic item can you do without?

Nova and I visited the Devil's Golf Course today i Nova and I visited the Devil's Golf Course today in Death Valley. If you're a people , you can walk out through the rocks as far as you'd like. If you're a dog you can go anywhere a car can go, so you can see stuff, but not walk on any trails or out into the field. Either way it's a cool place to visit down a VERY bumpy road.

Visited Ash Meadows in Nevada today. It's really Visited Ash Meadows in Nevada today. It's really cool. It's a ways down a VERY dusty and bumpy road though.

There were all kinds of animal prints in the salt and mineral buildup. I'm a bit of a nerd , so I had great fun trying to figure out what kind of animals had passed by.

My photo doesn't really show it , but that pool of water in the desert was as clear and blue as the springs in Florida.

If you come out to see Death Valley and you have the time definitely stop here, too! Nova approved.

Just another of the million things to see and do i Just another of the million things to see and do in central Arizona. There Is so much history here that you can still see. An 110 room, 1000 year old pueblo that you can walk around and even into one of the rooms. It's such a privilege and one more example of why it is so important that we keep these places as they are.

They even let you bring your leashed pups!

Happy Thanksgiving!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Did an overnight side quest to see Organ Pipe Cact Did an overnight side quest to see Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. It's not on the way to or from anywhere and I have been wanting to see it for ages but it's 3 hours from Benson AZ.

So worth the trip! There are several cactus species that only grow in this area. I got pictures of organ pipe cactus and senita.

It's a green desert which sounds odd until you see it. I don't think i've ever seen so many kinds of desert plants in one place in my life. And I was raised camping in the desert most weekends.

Also- The campground is amazing. There are no amenities but it more than makes up for it in views.
