Paddling the Mangrove Trails

There is a kayak trail through the mangroves near the area I usually go paddleboarding, but the water is generally very low, resulting in a muddy stinky mess more than a path.  This weekend, however, the tide was really high and the path looked navigable so we tried it out.

I’ve been around Florida water enough to know that mangroves can have some fairly nasty creatures in them.  Crabs and spiders come to mind – always try and duck under branches, don’t let them touch your hair!  Not to sound too crazy girly, but seriously. Don’t.

Anyways, I kept an eye out and saw nothing.  We went down the path and though it got narrow enough that there was no turning around on a paddleboard it was really cool. For those of you who haven’t tried paddleboarding yet take my word for it when I say that trying to paddle when the board’s fin is in front is not an easy task, you really want to turn the board around to go back the way you came.  The board knows you are doing it wrong and constantly tries to turn itself around.

Anyways, the mangrove trail was beautiful and kind of mysterious and very cool.

It is just as cool as you might think to paddle down a trail covered over by the trees, nice and shady and peaceful.  Paddle may be a strong word actually, because the trail got so narrow I kind if had to just push off branches to keep moving forward.  Fun, right? Oh hell ya, till I saw this.

One Crab

You know what’s a funny thing (not haha funny though)? Once you see one you see they are everywhere.  Kind of like when you buy a yellow car because no one else has one and then you see them at every red light.  But you can’t really connect with a crab like you can with a fellow driver.  Trust me. Or not, whatever.

So then I decided that I had paddled far enough down this path, and should go back to a bit more open water.  You know, the kind with sharks but no crabs.

Which is when I realized just how narrow the path actually was. Even when we found a place wide enough to turn around that meant going forward and back until you bumped the roots and made all the little creatures run about 8 times.  Good times.

I took the picture below of 1 crab. Got home and there where how many?

Crabs with arrows

Anyways, soon after we got back out on the bay we saw another tunnel to add to the list of things to check out, but breakfast was calling so that’ll be another trip.

Am I the only one totally creeped out by things that I know damn well can’t do a thing to me even if it did fall right on me?  Heaven forbid I ever look up and see a snake in the trees…

Looking for adventure and great photos!

Took a leisurely 4 days to drive from Utah to Sout Took a leisurely 4 days to drive from Utah to South Dakota. Quite a different after being in the desert so long!

These pictures are from my first outing in South Dakota, and yeah, I'd say it's pretty cool. For the record, the bison was walking up the left side of the road, so I pulled off on the right side a bit up the road to see if he would walk by. He crossed to my side and walked within a couple feet of the car! I did not try to pet the fluffy cow.

I got some amazing pictures but they don't do the reality justice. Definitely go if you get the opportunity!

I am not sure if I was in or just near Escalante to be honest. Either way, it's amazing how many completely different looking areas there are around here.

Hiked to the Maze Rock Art Site in Vermilion Cliff Hiked to the Maze Rock Art Site in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. It's a short & easy hike to see these petroglyphs, about a 1.5 total out and back. It's a really fun (remote) hike with very few people.

I cannot reccomend exploring National Monuments enough. They are just as awesome as our national parks, but usually have fewer crowds. Usually (not always!) they also have fewer amenities and more dirt roads, but they are awesome.

This isn't really a hike - it's right off the road This isn't really a hike - it's right off the road. But how cool is this tunnel?? It's also pitch black and uneven footing in the middle. Shockingly I didn't trip, but a light wouldn't have hurt.

I've been in Utah for only a few days but I already know I won't be running out of new places to hike this month!
Horse Shoe Bend has been on my list of places I'd Horse Shoe Bend has been on my list of places I'd like to see in person for a while. I realized I was passing it on my way to the grocery store in Page, AZ and had to stop. Ten dollars and a mile and a half round trip walk on a well graded path. So they said, but I'm not sure if it was even a mile total.
And dog friendly!! I'm still super excited I got to see it in person.

I was driving pretty much in the middle of nowhere I was driving pretty much in the middle of nowhere looking for a trail and saw a sign for Chaco pointing down a rutted dirt road. It was about 23 SLOW miles driving and then a 4 mile hike here. An amazing site! You walk past 3 smaller pueblos and lots of pictographs on the way.

The ranger said you could spend 2 or 3 days exploring the park and I could totally see that. There's a few other long hikes. I think I took 5 hours walking 8 miles. There is so much history to see! And another win - very few people.
One of the 3 kings! One of the 3 kings!
I had planned to go to Bisti Wilderness after Taos I had planned to go to Bisti Wilderness after Taos several months ago but had to cancel after my little hiking accident. But I finally made it! I'm really excited to explore the area. Day 1 was a five mile walk through amazing formations. Lots of petrified wood - I wasn't expecting that!

Hiked up Golden Canyon first thing this morning. Hiked up Golden Canyon first thing this morning. This is why a month in each place isn't too long. After work random hikes close to home and go straight to one of the busy hikes weekend mornings. You pass the crowds coming in as you're leaving. And in this case, beat the heat.

Death Valley keeps showing new shockingly beautiful places. I'm already planning to come back.
